Rare Tea Cellar, Chicago, Illinois, USA

Rodrick Markus is the Indiana Jones of tea, travelling to the most remote and forbidding places on earth hunting rare and precious teas, seeking inspiration for improbably delicious blends and acquiring old barrels that had spent years ageing sherry, brandy and bourbon – and are now infusing his teas with their unique flavours.

At his Rare Tea Cellar, he offers around 450 varieties of tea, including the astonishingly indulgent Emperor’s Private Reserve Himalayan Dream at US$8,000 a kilo, and a 1949 Pu-erh at US$30,000 a cake.

Happily, our selection of his teas is not nearly as expensive, but is still deliciously exotic.
