A: I’M EMILY. I MANAGE EVENTS AT THE NEW BLACK COFFEE.


Q: HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE SPECIALITY COFFEE INDUSTRY?

A: I’VE ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED IN COFFEE. WHERE IT’S GROWN, HOW IT’S PROCESSED AND OF COURSE HOW TO SERVE ESPRESSO AND FILTER COFFEE TO A PROFESSIONAL STANDARD.

I DID MY BARISTA TRAINING EIGHT YEARS AGO AND HAVE EXPERIENCE ACROSS A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT COFFEE BUSINESSES. WHEN THE ROLE AT THE NEW BLACK CAME UP,  I THOUGHT THAT’S PERFECT FOR ME!


Q: WHEN DID THE NEW BLACK START OFFERING COFFEE AT EVENTS?

A: OUR RETAIL STORE IN THE CITY STARTED TO GET REQUESTS FROM CUSTOMERS IN SPRING 2018. THEY LOVED OUR INCREDIBLE COFFEES AND WANTED US TO SERVE AT VARIOUS EVENTS.

AROUND THE SAME TIME, WE WERE EXPANDING OUR BARISTA STATION CONCEPT IN OFFICE BUILDINGS ACROSS LONDON.

OUR BARISTA STATIONS ARE EXTREMELY COMPACT AND THEY’RE EACH CAPABLE OF SERVING UP TO 700 CUPS PER DAY. WATER STORAGE AND FILTRATION IS BUILT IN AND THEY ONLY NEED A POWER SOCKET TO BE UP AND RUNNING. SO THEY’RE IDEAL FOR EVENTS.



 

Q: SO WHAT KIND OF EVENTS HAVE YOU ATTENDED?

A: MOSTLY CORPORATE AND COMPANY EVENTS SUCH AS EXHIBITIONS, PRODUCT LAUNCHES, AGM’S, CONFERENCES AND COMPANY MEETINGS. WE’RE STARTING TO GET MORE REQUESTS FOR PRIVATE AND SOCIAL EVENTS LIKE FESTIVALS, FOOD FAIRS AND WEDDINGS.


Q: DO YOU DO EVENTS OUTSIDE OF LONDON?

A: YES. JUST LAST WEEK WE DID A 3 DAY EVENT IN MANCHESTER FOR A BANK. THEY HAD AROUND 1,000 GUESTS. WE SERVED ESPRESSO MARTINIS IN THE EVENINGS TOO, WHICH WERE INCREDIBLY POPULAR!


Q: WHAT’S THE KEY TO DELIVERING GREAT COFFEE AT EVENTS?

A: PLANNING IN ADVANCE AND CLEAR COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY. UNDERSTANDING THE LOCATION. WATER AND POWER. WHEN AND HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE ATTENDING. THE AGENDA SO WE CAN DETERMINE THE FLOW OF GUESTS. MAKING SURE OUR BARISTA’S ARE BRIEFED. ENSURING THAT EVERYTHING IS ORDERED IN THE CORRECT QUANTITIES AND DELIVERED ON TIME.

SOME OF OUR CLIENTS REQUEST BRANDING ON THE BARISTA STATION AND CUPS SO I LIAISE WITH OUR INTERNAL DESIGNER TO GET THAT ORGANISED.



 

Q: DO YOU OFFER PASTRIES, CAKES AND SNACKS?

A: YES. WE HAVE ARTISAN PASTRIES, MUFFINS, CAKES AND TREATS. ALSO FRESH FRUIT AND HEALTHY SNACKS. WE OFTEN PARTNER WITH TOP CATERING FIRMS TO PROVIDE A COMPLETE SOLUTION TO CLIENTS.


Q: DO YOU ROAST YOUR OWN COFFEE?

A: NO WE DON’T. WE SOURCE FROM THE TOP ROASTERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. THEY’RE ALL SCA GRADE 1 COFFEES FROM ACCLAIMED ROASTERS.

THEY SELECT THE VERY BEST ARABICA VARIETIES LIKE GEISHA AND BOURBON AND THEN ROAST IN SMALL BATCHES WITH INCREDIBLE ATTENTION TO DETAIL.


Q: HOW MANY COFFEES ARE ON YOUR MENU?

A: OUR STANDARD MENU COMPRISES HOUSE ESPRESSO, GUEST ESPRESSO AND A DECAF ESPRESSO. AND THE SAME FOR FILTER COFFEE. THE GUEST ROASTS CHANGE QUARTERLY. AT THE MOMENT, WE HAVE FIVE ROASTERS ON THE MENU. CLIFTON, THE BARN, BAILIES, WORKSHOP AND LOVE COFFEE.


Q: WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITE?

A: THEY ARE ALL BRILLIANT BUT OUR HOUSE ROAST FROM CLIFTON – WOW!

IT’S CALLED E1 PROJECT ESPRESSO. IT’S EXQUISITE. THE AROMA IS MESMERISING AND I LOVE SEEING THE LOOK ON PEOPLE’S FACES WHEN THEY TASTE IT FOR THE FIRST TIME!
